About us / History

We are Prestwick Howie Bowling Club, Est 1935. This section will give the history of the major competitions competed for within the club.

The Joe Reid Trophy

Joe Reid was a long standing Secretary of the club, ex Royal Navy and a baker to trade. Even ahead of his time with a shaven head! His family donated a trophy and a one off prize of £100 for the inaugural event. One can imagine that would have been keenly contested!

The Jo Stewart Trophy

Jo Stewart was one of life’s great organisers, and is credited for singled handedly licking the Ladies into shape to win the Ayr District Senior Triples in 1996. She always thought it was a shame that the first round losers in the Joe Reid Trophy were hanging around with nothing to do. So on her death, it was felt that it would be fitting that she could resolve this conundrum with a second chance trophy in her name.

The Ross Rose Bowl

Fred and Nan Ross were longstanding and enthusiastic members of the club, and Nan was Lady President in 1970. Their daughters, Nancy and Irene, presented the Trophy in their memory.

The Tourist Trophy

The Tourist Trophy was presented to the club by the Prestwick Tourist Association and was first won in 1970 by J Flynn and A Dick. It was originally an open competition and attracted the many holidaymakers who came to the area each year, but eventually became a Club only event. Our Honorary President, John Prentice was a winner in 1980 along with Maria Laurie, with a field of 36 pairs!

Sheila Lothian Trophy

Previously a precious member at the club, Sheila Lothian has left a huge legacy at our club. Her trophy is played for annually at the club in a mixed tournament. Here you can see her trophy.

Sheila Lothian plaque outside the Prestwick Howie Building is gold and engraved with black text which reads "the frontage of this building was replaced in November 2025, thanks to the generosity of our late, dear friend Sheila Lothian.
